Melinda's story
From the outside, Melinda* seemed to be managing.
But behind closed doors, she was doing everything she could to protect her young daughter Katy* from a home that had become unsafe. The arguments had grown more frequent – and more frightening – and Melinda knew she had to leave.
She packed what she could – including Katy's favourite toys – and the two of them drove away together. With no family nearby and nowhere to turn, the car became their home. Melinda told herself it would only be for a little while.
When a Mission Australia case worker reached out, Melinda finally felt safe enough to share what she and Katy had been through. She was connected to emergency accommodation and supported to find stable, long-term housing.
Today, Melinda has a safe home to raise her daughter – and Katy has a bed to call her own.

Where the money goes
Mission Australia was proud of the $164,000 raised during our first year event to support our national homelessness services.
Already we have been able to provide greater aid to Wattle House in Perth, providing emergency relief such as food parcels, clothing, utility bill assistance, and food vouchers, alongside housing support services aimed at families and individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
Services in the Murrumbidgee Region in NSW now have funding to widen the reach of their food pantry pop ups to help struggling Australians, as well as providing crisis and transitional accommodation, and maintaining their 24/7 crisis line that supports those experiencing or at risk of homelessness as a result of domestic and family violence.
These are some examples of how our services have provided extra support thanks to Sleep In Your Car.
Your questions answered
When does Sleep In Your Car take place?
Sleep In Your Car is a virtual challenge in August 2026. You can join us on Saturday 8th August or choose an alternate night to take part in the challenge.
There is no set start time -- "bedtime" looks different to everyone -- but the challenge is to sleep in your car overnight.
Register now to hit the brakes on homelessness.
How much does it cost to register?
Sleep In Your Car is free to take part!
We want as many people as possible to join so that we can have the greatest possible impact for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
How do I participate in the challenge?
Registering for the event will automatically set up your fundraising page.
Reach out to family, friends and colleagues to raise money to help end homelessness in Australia.
Then, on your chosen night, find someplace safe to park your car -- a driveway or quiet street -- and sleep in your car overnight.
It's a bad night's sleep for a good cause.
