Melinda's story

From the outside, Melinda* seemed to be managing.

But behind closed doors, she was doing everything she could to protect her young daughter Katy* from a home that had become unsafe. The arguments had grown more frequent – and more frightening – and Melinda knew she had to leave.

She packed what she could – including Katy's favourite toys – and the two of them drove away together. With no family nearby and nowhere to turn, the car became their home. Melinda told herself it would only be for a little while.

When a Mission Australia case worker reached out, Melinda finally felt safe enough to share what she and Katy had been through. She was connected to emergency accommodation and supported to find stable, long-term housing.

Today, Melinda has a safe home to raise her daughter – and Katy has a bed to call her own.

Do it together

With your mates

They're an accountability buddy, a group hug, and the resounding ‘cheers’ as you celebrate the end of a bad night's sleep. You can set up a team during registration and increase your impact. Whether you park in the same location or participate virtually, it's easier to get through the uncomfortable night together.

With your colleagues

Bring the workplace together to collectively sleep rough for a night. It's a one-of-a-kind bonding experience they can be proud of, while making it known to stakeholders, employees and wider public that, like us, you believe no Australian should have to call their car a home.

Where the money goes

Mission Australia was proud of the $164,000 raised during our first year event to support our national homelessness services.

Already we have been able to provide greater aid to Wattle House in Perth, providing emergency relief such as food parcels, clothing, utility bill assistance, and food vouchers, alongside housing support services aimed at families and individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Services in the Murrumbidgee Region in NSW now have funding to widen the reach of their food pantry pop ups to help struggling Australians, as well as providing crisis and transitional accommodation, and maintaining their 24/7 crisis line that supports those experiencing or at risk of homelessness as a result of domestic and family violence.

These are some examples of how our services have provided extra support thanks to Sleep In Your Car.
